Tie lines connecting 2 SQ7's

In connecting two SQ7’s together through the tie lines, does the main SQ7 gain control setting affect the gain to the second SQ7?

The first SQ (the one connected to the stage box or the one who’s input sockets you are using) sets the channel gain. The second SQ will get it’s signal from the core of the first so the gain is already set and is what it is.

You can use the digital ‘trim’ control on the second to alter the level coming into a channel but that is just level - it’s not actually controlling the gain at the socket.

Thanks Robinhow. I was trying to find a way that our gain structure on the second mixer wouldn’t be affected by the gain being changed on the first FOH mixer. I guess we could split every signal in two, then feed separate signals to mixer 1 and mixer 2. Our engineers have a tendency to adjust gain on the fly, which would make the broadcast engineer subject to the FOH changes.

Yes, a passive split and multiple a-d’s is the only way to control the actual preamps directly.

Perhaps the note about the possibility of also switching the FOH console, after careful gain adjustment, to the mode where the preamp controls are now trim controls (‘Preamp On Surface’).
Now both technicians can independently adjust their pre channel levels as if they were using gain.

Yup, believe this is called ‘Gain Compensation’ or ‘Gain Sharing’ where if the Gain gets turned up on one console the Gain on the other console is automatically compensated by attenuating the Gain by the same amount.

That feature is available on the Dlive system when you have multiple DLive Mixracks in the same system, but I don’t think it is available on any of the other A&H systems.

Mmmm ok darn it!! :grimacing:
