+1 For now, I have nearly 20 multitracks with the same names and timestamps - it`s a problem
Agree 100% - the date stamps and default file naming conventions in the CQ series are redonkulous - this should be an extremely minor fix via firmware release, and having 2 pages of “+1” comments really should elevate this request to a prioritized dev track
Ps. I find it frustrating that there is nothing from A&H back to the forum about which feature requests are being considered - that means we’re all just flying blind requesting stuff that we each think is important, all with no indication back to us on acceptance, timing, etc. so I made that a new feature request - please +1 if you agree that’s a valid request
Hi,
I think that if it was easy as a simple software feature it would already be done. ![]()
Allen & Heath does not answer on this… Perhaps they’re is no clock chip in the CQ Series ?
I cant even grasp the complexity of the CQ firmware/operating system, but would it not be a good idea if the CQ does not have a system clock persay to extract the time from a connected device? Otherwise Im guessing its more a hardware build issue adding a system clock and battery like a PC than it is a software issue. So everytime you hit record the time is grabbed from connected device if it is there, obviously it us with the CQ20

I realise that without RTC hardware, date/time is not persistent, but is there any way for the system to simulate elapsed time since boot-up without RTC hardware?
As happy as I am with my CQ18, if there really is a hardware limitation that prevents timestamps for recordings, I feel like thats an unfortunate decision on A&H’s part… It’s not like this is some exotic feature…
Same request… any help to differentiate takes/nights
Even a prompt for a session name when setting up a recording with a toggle to name/skip each time.

How many “+1” posts must be collected before we have a prediction from A&H that there will be a solution?
@guitarteach that is an excellent idea if in fact there’s a hardware limitation vis a vis clock. +10000
Hi all,
The lack of a real time clock is a hardware design decision which means the mixer does not know the time to be able to timestamp the recording.
This decision was mainly based on two things
- It adds a surprising amount of cost for relatively little benefit (please let us know if there is anything other than the timestamping of recordings). Note that every part of the CQ (and Qu/SQ) is custom designed and built. There is no SBC where an RTC would come for free.
- It would necessitate a battery which would need replacing and could leak, or a super cap which again adds cost and complications (how big? how often are shows?)
Determining time by some other means is something we have been investigating, but as with all potential features, we cannot say if it will definitely be included in a future firmware as we never know until it’s been developed and fully tested. As it’s not a definite ‘no this can never happen’ however, we’ve not jumped in on this thread before.
If this thread continues as one of the most popular suggestions, it will be prioritised for more development time.
Thanks,
Keith.
Thanks for the reply, even if it’s not very encouraging…
As an idea of use, I use it 1-3 times a week, and during a work, I have at least 3-5 recorded multitrack parts every working day.
Maybe a good idea would be for the file name to take something from the numerology of the folder = so that, for example, when editing a video when a file needs to be relinked…you don’t have the SAME FILE NAME in the different folders of that working day .
Great in everything!
Thank you Keith for answering to this thread. You take the time but you did it !
Well, it’s clear for me that this thread is the most popular on CQ Serie ![]()
So any software solution will be better for me than the actual timestamps.
Regards,
Jerome.
A button on the recording screen that would allow the naming of a recording folder would be a huge help on this.
another potential workaround might be to have the recording folder name be inherited from the scene in use. I often date scenes and save them at the outset of a show.
I’m definitely for this. Please make this possible. My Soundcraft Ui12 can do this. Needless to say, I’m not using it anymore.

If clock is not integrated…
record a SMPTE Time Code to a channel. Then you can always sync to video using software. And see relative times between recordings. It will cost you 1-channel.
Futurewise AH could make a time-code ‘grabber’ that will continue at free run from that point (if the timing is stable while turned on).
But I have to say, that is a ‘pro’ feature. Don’t know if that should be targeted to a ‘CQ’ product.
Sorry, you must have misunderstood.
In this topic the users are missing a “time stamp” - not a time code.
