Trouble configuring IP8

Hi, we have been using the dLive system for a couple years with ME1 for stage IEM. We are trying to allow some control for open monitors from stage. The IP8 looks like the perfect solution of control within parameters so it does not completely overpower FOH speakers.

I am completely unable to get the device configured. We have static IP addresses for our mix rack and surfaces that is outside the range of the static address of the IP8.

Following the instructions I have connected it directly to a laptop with the same IP address range. From command prompt, it successfully pings but will NOT connect via browser or dLive software.

Will I have to completely reset the entire mixrack and surface addresses to match the IP8 range in order to connect and reconfigure this device? Or is there some trick I am not understanding?

Thanks in advance!

When you say that it won’t connect to the DLive, are you speaking about the process of setting it up as a “Controller” under either the “MixRack” tab or the “Surface” tab? If you are simply plugging in the IP8 and expecting it to connect to the DLive system, it is unfortunately not that simple. Can you explain a little more about what your process has been up to this point?

That being said, I would start by connecting the IP8 directly to the DLive system via one of the regular network plug either on the Mixrack or the Surface. Both devices have a pair of network ports so that you can connect multiple devices this way.

It doesn’t matter which device you physically connect the IP8 to, you still need to set it up as a “Mixrack Controller” or a “Surface Controller”. In other words, even if you physically plug the IP8 directly to the Mixrack, you can still set it up as a “Surface Controller” and vice versa.

When you properly set up the controller under the Mixrack or Surface tab, you will get a green link icon (in the list of controllers that have been setup) to indicate that the system is actually connected to the IP8. If you do not see this green link (it shows a red link when it is not connected), then you have a network issue (probably with the network addresses) that needs to be corrected.

Once you get the IP8 linking correctly, then you can think about plugging it into the larger network - it doesn’t have to stay plugged directly into the Mixrack or Surface. However I think that is the easiest way to ensure there are no network issues preventing you from connecting to the DLive.

The IP8 will have different functionality depending on whether you set it up as a “Mixrack Controller” or a “Surface Controller”. If you set it up as a “Surface Controller”, that Surface must be powered on for the IP8 to function properly (regardless of where the IP8 is physically plugged in). If you set it up as a “Mixrack Controller”, it will function normally as long as the Mixrack is powered on. The Surface doesn’t have to be turned on in that case for it to function. This may or may not be important depending on your situation.

Thanks for reply. I have attempted to connect to mixrack and dLive directly. I have also attempted to connect to a PC directly. I appreciate that it will not be that easy for the setup, that makes sense.

The root problem is that the IP8 has DHCP turned off and assigned IP address 192.168.1.73 and the rest of my system has IP addresses 192.168.3.#. So my first step required is to change the initial IP address in that same subnet.

When i connect it directly to a PC that has a network card in that range (192.168.1.50), the PC will ping the IP8 address from the command prompt but when i enter the address in a browser the IP8 will not connect. This is described in the setup manual as a workaround to connect to change address. I think there are ‘network issues preventing’ me from connecting  but I cannot figure out how to get around them.

That is why I was questioning if I have reset my entire system to the 192.168.1.# subnet.

Have you tried resetting the network settings on the IP8 by pressing the reset button on the back of the unit? That should reset the IP8 to the default network address of 192.168.1.73. You should be able to connect it to a computer in the same network range (ie 192.168.1.50 as in your example) and then access the IP8 device by using an internet browser on address 192.168.1.73. Once there, you should be able to change the IP8 address to something in the same network subnet as the DLive system.

If that doesn’t work then as you suggest, an alternative is to change the DLive system to IP addresses within the 192.168.1.x subnet. However if you have more than one IP8, you are going to have to change the default IP address on them since you cannot have two devices with the same IP address (192.168.1.73).

Hi, Any chance that a crossover cable is required to talk with IP8 from PC?

I don’t think so. I’m trying to remember the exact process I used initially, but I’m pretty sure I used a direct connection to my computer to change the IP addresses of the IP8s to the subnet that the DLive lives on. That being said, I currently use a POE switch with the IP8s since it provides power to the units too.

Are you sure the power supply you are using is providing enough power to the IP8? They are pretty “power hungry” and use up to 25 watts of power which means if you are using a 12v power brick, it needs to be able to provide 2.1 amps of power (or more). If you are using POE, the switch needs to support POE+.
