USB Asio 5m cable

Hi there,

I am using my sq5 as an audio interface and currently using a 2m passive usb cable. It works great, no problems. However, due to physical limitations, my desktop and mixer are placed in such a way that the usb cable has to run over my lap. I dont want to move them to the same side because of physical limitations and estethics. I’ve been trying to read up on longer usb cables, but i just wanted to check on here if anyone has had any good experience with any specific usb cable 4-5m long. I dont need longer than that. I just want it to run behind the desk so that I do t need to have the cable over my legs. Yes, I will isolate it from surrounding cables by attaching it to the wall, at least 20cm away from all cables behind.

Thanks!

I’m successfully using a product called “UDG Ultimate USB 2.0 Cable” with my SQ5 and other consoles and audio interfaces. Unfortunately, it is only available up to 3 meters. 5 meters should work with USB 2, but it could become critical, so you might need an active extension cable, which essentially is a 1-port USB hub internally… and not always, audio interfaces work well via USB-Hubs.

I recently even had issues with the cable I mentioned, and it turned out putting some contact cleaner into my laptop’s USB connector solved it. This entire USB thing is more fragile than I would like it to be, and it’s not the fault of the SQ. Getting the samples across that cable in due time requires decent cables and clean connectors – I have had a similar issue before with an old Yamaha 01v96i. Unfortunately, most high-end USB cables are in the domain of voodoo marketing, like sounding better, which is complete nonsense. As long as every sample arrives in the PC on time, they will sound absolutely identical.

Not completely the answer you wished for, I assume.

I’ve had issues with video usb cables. They make specifically high bitrate (20-40 gbs) versions which fixed it. I wonder if that would help, as audio is so much less info.

Video over USB likely means USB-C HDMI passthru? Which would be around 1.5gbit/sec at FullHD resolution.

However, the SQ series only uses USB 2. Still, better shielding will always help.
