USB-B audio output and MIDI input to two different devices simultaneously

Hi, is there a way to output digital audio out while also receiving USB MIDI in? I can get digital audio out via the USB-B port, but I’m also using that for USB MIDI in. I tried using the ethernet port for midi by plugging it into an iConnectivity mioXM, but I couldn’t get that working. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi.
The USB-B port is designed to handle both audio and midi together.
Tell us more about your setup when it does not work.

Hi thanks for your reply! Yes it can handle both, but how do you use that single port to split it between two different devices where one device is getting audio and the other device is sending midi. So one USB-B port → two devices.

You won’t be able to send midi into the CQ without an Midi hub, should it be external hardware or via an app that route midi if you are using PC or tablet.
External hardware like BomeBox or my DIY device (when the Ethernet version will be finished):

Yes I know, I’m already successfully sending midi to the CQ via the mioXM. And I know I can send audio out the USB-B connected to a computer or iPhone or whatever. I just want to be able to do both things at the same time.

Your setup is a bit vague. But to me it sounds like all you need is to add a USB hub. And to think over what gear acts as USB Host vs Device. Right now, it seems as if you connect the CQ USB B port to one of the mioxm’s host ports. I never used the mioxm but I think that makes it the Host and the CQ one of its Devices. But it cannot receive audio.

This may be the proper setup:

  • Computer/phone (USB host) with a USB hub.
  • Mioxm connected via its usb B port to the USB hub (a Device)
  • The CQ connected to the USB hub (a Device)

This way, the CQ will present itself as an audio interface to the computer. And midi controllers connected to the Mio should be able to send midi to the computer which gets forwarded to the CQ.

Good luck.

If I understand well, when the CQ is plugged into the mioXM in USB, you cannot get any audio. This is normal to me because the mioXM is a USB hub, and doesn’t take care of the audio signal available in the USB.
Also, it doesn’t work in ethernet because (again to my understanding) the mioXN use RTP-midi.
CQ mixer uses TCP-midi and are not compatible with RTP-midi.

I wanted to do this also, but can’t really find a solution other than to use one of the XLR ports and a device to convert signal to “another” usb audio out.
