Usb output sound

Trying to route a IP direct out to the USB to give signal to a headphone amplifer. The built in 1/4 in does not have enough power for the heaphones i have and start to break up at higher volumes. However i cannot seem to get it to work. Am i missing something? In IO screen i patch the IP direct oout to USB. Ive tried using both usb ports and no sound.

The PAFL outputs are found on the I/O tab under Outputs → PAFL (not under Outputs → IP Direct Out). You should be able to patch then to the USB output pretty easily.

That being said, I never considered the headphone output of the Avantis low. There are several things I would check…

What headphones are you trying to use with the console? More specifically I guess, what is the impedance of the headphones? Are they really high impedance?

Is the output low on all audio coming out of the headphone outputs, or only for the default PAFL buss? If you have lowered the output somewhere along the signal path (fader, DCA, etc), this will affect the level of the headphone output for the default PAFL buss audio.

Have you set the output to AFL or are you using PFL? Has there been any PFL Trim adjustment?

The headphones are HiFiman edition xs. Pfl trim is wide open.

Im using this console as sort of a hybrid pre amp and midi to control pro tools. Im sending out to pro tools via dante then sending the master of pro tools back into the console as a 2 track. Ive tried to route that 2 track to the usb and also tried routing the pafl buss to the usb. Ive tried routing lots of things to the usb to just try and get something to play and i get nothing.

The headphone output was uncomfortable with audio technica M50x cans at a little above 4 notches but with the hifi cans they break up just above half volume. I played other thjngs through the headphone amp from the computer and they did just fine at higher volumes.

Will the usb transmit live audio or is it just for recording to a drive?

Wait; are you trying to use the USB-A connectors on the console to connect a usb headphone amp? that will not work!

patching to USB means you can record audio with the onboard audio recorder. there is no USB audio support on Avantis.

if the avantis built-in headphone amp is insufficient to your taste; why dont you hook up a headphone amp to one of the XLR outputs on the console?

Yes thats what i was trying to do. The headphone amp is also a DAC so it needs a digital signal. Isnt the AES a digital out? Im gonna try that to Coaxial and see if itll work? I may have to go another route.

Using the coaxial input will not save you there…
Coaxial is probably S/PDIF which is not physically compatible with AES

i don’t think you will get the HiFiman amp to connect to the console.
Since it looks like you’re only using the console as a midi controller for pro-tools. cant you route your audio from pro-tools to the amp directly (over USB) instead of dante → mixer → amp?

Im going to have to come up with a way either via an aggregate device or a separate Aux mix from pro tools i guess… I do use the console to send the 2 track mix to our cameras for live streaming services amd as such monitor the incoming channels which is why i wanted to be able to PAFL It. I could do a analog to digital converter but im not a fan of more conversions than necessary

Those two headphones are close enough in their impedance to each other that there shouldn’t be a big difference in volume levels between the two. They are also close enough in impedance to the headphones I typically use that I can say that the “low volume” issue is not due to the impedance of the headphones you are using.

I still find it a little hard to believe that you can’t get the headphone outputs on the Avantis to be adequate. I have to assume you must be mixing live shows with extremely high volumes at the FOH position (like 100-105db). Otherwise, there is something else going on. Either it’s a setup issue or a hardware problem. I never had an issue getting the PAFL output to a reasonable listening level and honestly my gain knob was usually only around 2 or 3 (out of 10). I never experienced and “breaking up” of the audio either. But admittedly I wasn’t mixing shows at extreme db levels either.

This setup is in an isolated room where FOH volume isnt an issue. The Headphone “volume” isnt really the issue so to speak, they are just not delivering the bass response that they should be delivering due to lack of power. Distortion would be a better work for “break up” i suppose. Im not using these to mix a FOH show but rather to mix/master recorded music. They are open backs so mixing live just iant in the cards for these.
