I have a client who is using a matrix to feed the USB Stereo Record, but the volume of the recording is too low to post online for a podcast. The output for the room is just perfect and they don’t want to use an aux to feed the USB as a matrix works the best for the situation because the audio engineers are usually volunteer. What would you suggest as a method of getting the level of the USB recording up without effecting the main mix and requiring no post production? (Feature Request) Add a digital gain adjustment to the Stereo Record screen, to allow engineer to trim up or trim down the level at the recording. Like the old Tascam CD recorders…
As far as I understand the reference guide correctly, it should be possible to set the LR-send to the matrix as pre-fader, which should give you a significant increase in signal. If that’s not enough, you could also try setting the send to the matrix to >0dB to introduce some gain beforehand.
The Matrix also features a full set of processing which should allow you to use the compressor’s make-up gain for further improvements while limiting the output just below 0dB.
I would guess that the gain structure is not correct. Probably the preamp levels are too low and the speaker amp level is too high. There are a lot of discussions in this forum about low volume recordings and how to correct it.
You could use makeup gain in the otherwise defeated compresor (threshold to max), or you could just put the main mix with +10dB into the matrix. Or just turn down the volume of the studio speakers, so you ride the mixer on higher levels, thus more coming out of main.
