Using Subwoofers on Aux & other Sends

Hi,
I have a ZED 22FX and unfortunately not enough Aux Out’s (only 3) which I use for foldback/monitors.
My question is… For (Live Band mixing) I’m wanting to put my Sub’s on a separate out to the main mix and control it separately, instead of the usual (Top’s - Bottoms speakers) full range linking.

Has anyone done this ? or is this even something I can do with this desk?

thanks

It depends on what you mean by “control it separately”.
A separate mix of the sources with low-frequency content is obviously not possible using the conventional way.
But if, in addition to Main LR, you only mean separate outputs to the subwoofer power amplifiers, you could achieve this via the “ALT OUT” output pair, where you could also specify whether the signal is used pre or post Main LR fader.
However, the ALT OUTs are unbalanced RCA jacks, and you would need to balance the signal (with a suitable kind of transformer) to send it to the amps if they are not located directly next to the mixer.

Alternatively, you could do the following unconventional thing:
Use a mono signal for your LR, e.g., L, and use R cheeky to drive your subwoofers. )
In this configuration, all PAN controls are set to L, and you can determine the extent to which channels send signals to the subwoofer by adjusting the gain towards R.
If necessary, you should also use any stereo sources as mono, i.e. only use their “L/M” socket.

Edit: Of course, your sub-amps would have to have the appropriate filters (speaker management) to only use the corresponding low frequencies.

Hi,
Thank you for your feedback, essentially we have 2x powered 1200w subwoofers which are generally linked to their respective 2x 2000w powered tops. I want to have the subs on a separate “out” rather than being linked to those tops, but without having to get a new desk with 6 x aux outs. Trying to find a way to utilise what we have in the Zed-22fx Thank you

Great. So both options could be possible for you.
