Vocal Reverb and Compressor

Hi,

Just got the new AH Qu Mixer, What is the suggestion for best Reverb and compressor for Vocals.

Thank you

Not meant to sound like an ass, but the simple answer is the one that works.

There is no hard and fast rule for what is best. It is all subjective and varies depending on what you are trying to accomplish and what the singer is like, what mic you are using, and so on.

Your best bet is to play around with each reverb and compressor and mess with settings until you find one that you like and find suits your music best.

I’m fond of the EMT250 preset for a room reverb, and Hall Barfoot for a hall.

Vocal compression - you generally want an attack time of 10-20ms and a fairly slow release (usually 50-250ms). Adjusting the attack time may adjust the tone of the vocal a little, so be sure to “dial it in” for each vocalist. The shorter the release time the “closer” the vocalist will feel while the longer the release time is the “father away” the vocal will sound. Normally I would use a soft knee with a ratio around 3:1 or 4:1.

Vocal reverb - start with the “Hall” presets, but be willing to experiment to see which ones you like best.

I tried the manual experiment with the settings approach and gave up. What I ended up doing was to take a few hours when the venue was empty and go through the factory verbs while playing representative tracks from Youtube in three categories: Vocals, Bands and Drums.

For each of the three categories, I went through the Factory Presets one by one changing every 10 seconds and wrote down the ones I thought sounded good in my space. I then went back and tried my favorites with another track narrowing the list to 2-3. For each of the 3 categories, I saved those best 2-3 in USER presets with a name starting with V, B, or D.

Now, for a given event, I setup the FX rack with the best suited user preset for that event in each of the three categories. I use the 4th FX if I feel I want two for the same category (like a vocal delay). YMMV
