XONE: K3 - LED Colour Change via MIDI

Hey!
Touchdesigner user here, love the Xone K3 but please give us RGB control (or just 16 colors) would make the controller absolute! Would be sick if same color numbers as Novation Launchpad etc, good luck and hopefully one day it will be here!

I got sysex rgb working consistently with 1ms throttle in mixxx on 10 buttons in top layer with 4 more on shift, and on 4 buttons in each bottom layer, using K2 type midi colors for other buttons. All changes / re-maps are also diffed to avoid excess sysex spam which mixxx isn’t happy with on any level without a 1ms throttle and queue system.

Now i’m happy… but also miserable i need to go wireshark more data to find out how to revert sysex back to midi control for shutdowns. For now i’m not even doing a shut down routine and relying on rebooting the K3s. Also means i have to use sysex on all layers for that LED if i use it on one. BUT… it’s working without any issues finally.

I’m much less pissed over all this color bs now, because I DID go and look at other controllers aiming to sell my K3s… then i realized there’s still literally nothing out there that comes close to K2/K3 for feel + amount of controls… like sure some midi fighter etc smaller units are super nice, but it’s not the same volume of controls and wouldn’t fit my purposes so well.

I’m even considering releasing the mapping when it’s fully done and tested now; initially I was still pissed and debating not releasing it because it’s basically free work for a company that couldn’t even be bothered to give me the damn sysex which they must obviously have at least partly documented somewhere.

Anyway… yea… mixed feelings. Both appreciation of just how superior A&H feels, and still kinda pissed off too, but trying other options seriously rekindled my love of A&H quality and reminded me why i went straight for a K3 in the first place… and then another a few months despite already knowing the color issues.

All of the requests from users is such low hanging fruit for A&H

We’ve been asking for nine months now and nothing

My only hope is that this controller is very new and I hope that in the next update they consider the feedback that has been made in this forum. For my part, soft pickup is a hassle, and don’t even get me started on configuring the RGBs… it’s impossible

I was using djay pro with my mobile phome while on vacation and I was surprised to see the xone K3 can actually display different hues on the same button within each layers with latching layers mode on, I’d like to understand why it’s not possible with Traktor if anyone cares to explain, thanks…

How many hues per single button on the same layer can be shown in a djay pro? Can you explain a little bit more? Because latching layers are the reason why you can have different colors on the same LED buttons over 3 different layers. And every button can have different color. Traktor definitely can have this. You just need to customize/hardcode them via Xone Controller Editor for your taste. One button can be green in one layer, blue in another and red in the third layer. But other button can be in other, different 3 colors combination. But we want more flexible color controls from the DJ software itself, not from the predefined 3 colors for every button inside the K3 layers.

Maybe You are talking about something like this (every button has different color on every layer)?

It’s in all controls latching layer mode but it does not really matter I believe when it comes to this issue, I am also really disappointed with the rgb limitations of the Xone K3. Now I just rechecked for the sake of accuracy how the K3 works with djay pro and actually there is no different hues for the same button (my bad) within one layer but the buttons can switch to white or white backlighting , brief or constant, whatever the original hue is, when a function is toggled or turned off. So no real different hues indeed but it does switch color, which would make, to me at least, a big difference already, unfortunately I haven’t been able to map this within traktor, I use all controls latching layer mode, with different colors on every layers that just go off when toggled… If anyone knows how to map these white lights, please lemme know, thanks!

Maybe You can describe in steps what result you want to achieve? Or what feature you want to replicate which now works for you in djay pro? Because at the moment I can’t understand. :hugs:

Thanks for taking the time, well, as I was describing when used whith Dj pro, the K3 can turn a button from a color to white within a same layer when toggled, or modified, etc… I would like to achieve this in Traktor, as for now, in my mapping, buttons simply go from a color to dark. The ability to have buttons switch from a color to white and also dark would give me an extra visual feedback. For instance, you have a button assigned to a function in one layer. That button is let’s say blue (and turns dark when toggled), that same button is assigned to another function within the same layer thanks to a modifier but could then have a white feedback ( instead of blue ) . Hope this was somewhat clear enough …

As an exemple: the top encoder is assigned to a loop function, you press the encoder, it turns green when loop is on, dark when off. When the switch button is hold, that same encoder is assigned to a filter, it could then turn white instead of green when toggled despite being within the same layer, as for now it also turns green in my current mapping.

What You are describing, can be achieved in Traktor by simply not using the latching layers from K3 at all. Instead you need to use the Traktor application itself to “paint” LED lights as you want with one of the modifiers for switching layers + send monitor state. And second modifier for anything You need. The only limit for this - the combination of 3 colors can be used per button. And the fourth state - OFF color/backlight.

I know the latching layers can have these DARK/WHITE LED backlights on every button.
I will try to check how latching layers works on the K3 and let You know the results. Because I have not used them at all on K2 and not using them on K3.

Thank you, I am well aware of the differences between latching layers on and off when it comes to setting buttons colors. I have no problems setting colors in either modes but what I was describing in djay pro is a proper white light ( no backlight) as well as a color on the the same button within a layer in latching layer all controls mode on…

OK here is my humble research results.
What I have found out, I think the DJAY pro doesn’t use native latching layers from the K3 controller. In this video, when the controller is connected to the computer, the LAYER button doesn’t light up. With latching layers ON, it should light up in red instantly:

The LAYER button lights up only after the program has been opened.

Now about the DJAY layout itself. I don’t have this application and didn’t used it, but from videos on YouTube and from the controller layout prints on the A&H website here, looks like the LED lights in DJAY are used with the combination of 3 led lights. Every button have 3 colors and uses them in every layer differently. One color per layer but sometimes the same color from the 1 layer is used on the layer 3 as an alternative color with SHIFT. But this is only my assumptions because I don’t use DJAY application.

I have created a small TSI file for Traktor with the conditions You have described above.

  • When the loop is not activated, the LED light of the encoder will be disabled (or with the backlight ON - it depends how it is configured on the Xone controller editor).
  • When the encoders will been pressed - the LED will lit in GREEN (LOOP ON).
  • With the SHIFT button pressed, the LED will change color to the RED and the encoder rotation will work as a FILTER/FX adjustment on Deck A.
  • With the release of the SHIFT button, the LED will go back to the GREEN (loop ON) or to the black/backlit color (LOOP OFF)

Like I said, I think the DJAY uses combination of 3 LED lights per button + the resting color/backlit of the buttons. But it depends how every button are configured inside the Xone controller editor. It is possible DJAY uses K3 via internal “xone controller editor” because here is an interesting line:

Allen & Heath and Algoriddim collaborated on an official three-layer mapping for djay Pro that covers roughly 90 to 95 percent of the software’s capabilities.

Did anyone try to vibe code this? To allow a different color per velocity operation, one must create a different firmware, not just firmware update. Current firmware is just slow version of K2 firmware.
