Zed 10 - low output volume

Hi guys

I have zed10 mixer , i noticed that the output level is lower than other mixers when connected to speakers.. like Yamaha or mackie .. and this was a surprise for me .. could you please explain to me that?? Because i tried to search online and i come across other ppl having the same results without any clear answer!

To be clear, the back switch of -30 db is off, the mixer operates at full power

i set my gain for the vocal mic as usuall .. i put the main out to 0 .. and the channel level to 0 .. and the gain knob i adjust it depends on the performer but in the LED indicators i let it rest on 0 while pressing the PFL

To get same powerful output like yamaha or mackie i have to turn the main out to full +10 .. but i keep it at 0 with yamaha and mackie !

Just two questions to narrow down the problem:
Are you actually using the two balanced XLR outputs to connect your active speakers?
Can you confirm again that, in the current state, when you toggle the recessed -30 dB switch, the level to your speakers decreases significantly again (by 30 dB) – correct?

Hi,

Q1, yes, i have tested Yamaha, Behringer, Mackie as well as the zed 10 .. all in same environment and using the same mic, cables, speakers .. the reasults were shocking..

To add on that, i tested 3 units of zed 10 mixers .. same results ..so it is not a faulty unit .. i wrote this topic after i got frustrated and can’t think of anything else than the Zed 10 has low output volume

Q2, if the switch is toggled i can hardly hear anything

OK - and which speakers did you connect these consoles to?

M-audio monitors + other brands like yamah but mostly M-audio

Thanks, but that’s like saying I drive VW.

Looking at the documentation, your little ZED also delivers similar output levels to the other A&H mixers.
So, if you set your mixer’s levels so that the LR meters read 0 dB during operation, your active speakers should be delivering their nominal continuous power.
On Yamaha’s active monitors, for example, there’s a +4 dB (actually dBu) marking, which corresponds to the standardized level. If necessary, they can also be adjusted to be up to 14 dB more sensitive.

I find similar controls on M-Audio active monitors, and the 0 dB should probably correspond to the 0 dB on the mixer meters.
Here, too, the sensitivity can be increased if necessary.

If all of this contradicts your experience with the ZED, i.e. that the active monitors cannot operate as expected despite a displayed output level of 0dB, you should perhaps contact A&H directly and ask for clarification.

Thank you very much for the time and the effort you put on my issue.

But unfortunately despite how i adjust the speakers volume. when i try the other brand mixers with the same speakers setting it operates at noticeable better volume

I think i will contact support to explain that.

If you have other brand mixers like yamaha, behringer .. i would like to know how it is compared with A&H mixer output level

It sounds like you could use your speakers as required, but it irritates you that other mixers might produce a few dB more.
But that would be really not important as long as you’re leveling and using your system (mixer + speakers) according to standards.

I took a look at the most widely used Behringer X32 and see that it has the same maximum output level as your ZED-10.
So, with the mixer correctly set to the right level, both have a headroom of 17 dB, which your standard-adjusted active speakers should be able to handle.

But of course, I still can’t rule out the possibility that there’s a general problem with the ZED-10, so it’s better to ask A&H.
And it would be very nice if you could share the answer here.
